Parking garage replacement to impact Westmoreland County Courthouse

A $7 million project will have a major impact on downtown Greensburg starting Wednesday. Watch the full report in the video player above. Westmoreland County Commissioners approved emergency funding Tuesday to replace the parking garage below the courtyard at the Westmoreland County Courthouse. The project comes after commissioners said engineers discovered structural deficiencies in the structure. Issues with the garage started in 2019. The courtyard outside the courthouse and the main entrance to the courthouse will be closed. An alternate entrance along Main Street will open for the public looking to enter the courthouse.Commissioners said more than 170 people parked in the county parking garage, mostly county employees and elected officials. The county secured leases in nearby parking lots for those people that use the garage, which could limit parking for people heading to downtown Greensburg. Commissioners said they are still working on potential solutions to those problems, especially on days when residents are called to the courthouse for jury selection. County commissioners said funding for the project is coming from the American Rescue Plan. The goal is to have the project completed by this upcoming winter.
